To my sister who is contemplating having an abortion,

I can’t say that I know what you are going through, I can’t say that I know what it feels like. But there is one thing that I do know and that is that you have a choice. I pray that this letter will be able to encourage you to make the right choice. I am not calling it the right choice because I think so, the right choice is the choice that leads to life.

Life. Life is so precious, it is a gift from God. It is also one of the most undervalued gifts. Inside your stomach is a gift from God. God has given you this child and He wants you to take care of the child. He wants you to love this child like He loves you. He wants you to nurture this child so that they will grow up one day to worship Him. Think of this as your ministry. Think of this as an opportunity to submit to God and allow Him to lead you and assist you in raising your child.

Why do you want to have an abortion? Do you not feel that you will be able to be a good enough mother? Or do you worry that the father of the child will not be around? Are you not ready to have this child? Is this not the right time in your life to have a child? I believe in a God who can provide and who is willing to carry your burdens for you if only you give them to Him. I pray that this letter will show you just how marvellous God is and I pray that the knowledge of His grace and love will stop you from going through with this.

If only you realised that God can and will bring you out of this situation a victor. When God intervenes in a situation, you will really begin to see things change. Psalms 56:4 asks this question, ‘What can flesh do to me?’ That is so true. What can flesh do to us? We are told that our body is a temple. Our body is not a temple because our body is holy, our body is a temple because of what is inside of it. When King David decided to start the plans for the building of the temple, it wasn’t because he wanted everyone to marvel at the temple for it’s beauty, it was because he wanted a permanent home for the Ark of the Covenant. The temple wasn’t precious in itself, the temple was precious because inside it laid the Ark of the Covenant. In the same sense, our body is not precious because of what it is composed of or because it is aesthetically pleasing, our body is precious because within it is our soul. You might be thinking, but what has that got to do with me having an abortion? My answer to you is everything.

Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies. By that, this means your decision to have an abortion shouldn’t be influenced because you are making a decision to please the flesh. You shouldn’t have an abortion because society will judge you for having this child, you shouldn’t have an abortion because your mum will be angry at you if you have this child, you shouldn’t have an abortion because the father of the child is telling you to. We should not be engaging in fights with the flesh. We should be fighting to guard our spirits.

How can we guard our spirits? What are we guarding our spirits from? We are in a spiritual warfare. We are fighting against the evils of this world. The very fact that abortion is so largely accepted in todays society is more a reflection of the secular world that we live in than a sign that abortion is right. Popularity does not make something right. You need to pray for strength to overcome the evil thoughts that are trying to convince you that the life inside of you is evil and not worth living.

I’m not sure if you have heard about the case Roe v. Wade, but I want to share it with you. It is the case that legalised abortion in America. However after the ruling, the lady who went under the alias as Jane Roe changed her mind. They don’t really mention that these days.  ‘Jane Roe’ realised the emotional effects that this abortion could have and she realised that although she gave birth to the baby before the ruling was made, she was responsible for many innocent lives being lost and she learnt that abortion was being used by many as a type of birth control and not because their lives were in great risk. Roe also converted to Christianity and is now a pro-life campaigner. The sad thing is that although this law was made legal for her, she is now a strong campaigner against it yet that is still not considered as a reason to overturn the law. The emotional effect that having an abortion can have on women is often overlooked. The abortion doesn’t end after the surgery, it is not something that someone ever forgets that they did. Many people believe that you can just have an abortion and then that is the end of it, job done, no more child, but it is only the beginning.

To my sister in Christ, I just want you to know more than anything, that you are not alone. You do not have to be alone. You will not have to raise this child alone if only you would just admit that you need help. There is nothing wrong with being vulnerable, especially before God. When we pretend to be strong and take things into our own hands and try to sort everything out by ourselves, that is when we will fail and fall. Real strength is shown when you trust in God. You might feel as though you will have to raise a child without a father but I can tell you that there is a Man willing to be a Father to both you and your child if only you let Him.

I would also like to encourage you to get plugged into your church, or if you do not have one yet, to find a church home. I would advise you to not just go to the church on the Sunday but to also get involved in the women’s ministry department. I believe that it is very important to have friends in Christ who you are accountable to and this will also provide you with a support system because I can guarantee you that you will find a sister in the church who has felt how you are feeling now or knows someone who has felt that way. There is no better place to find people who will support you than in the church, I am not talking about financial support but I am talking about spiritual support. You will be able to find people who will pray with you and for you when times are hard as you raise your child and they will not be talking about you, criticising the way in which you have chosen to raise your child. How can they? We are all sinners saved by the grace of God, so what right do we have to judge others and condemn them?

I pray that you will find the strength to realise and understand that it is extremely important for you to chose life. I pray over your child because although they are not born, they still exist. I pray that your child will grow up to be a living testimony of the grace of God. I pray for the people around you so that they will be able to find the words to say to you to support you. I pray that you will keep on fighting, against the evil spirits that try and make you turn against God. I pray that you will keep fighting and that you will not give up because God is on your side so there is no way that you can lose. Most importantly, I pray for you! I pray that you will turn to God at what may feel like a difficult time I pray that you will realise that you are not alone and that there are many around you who are willing to help and provide for you. I pray that you will be able to feel God’s love for you and be able to pass this on to your child and that you will also be able to love again. I do not know what you are going through or how you feel but I know a Man who does, He is willing to help you and He has bought you with His blood, He loves you so much more than you can ever imagine and I pray this prayer in His name,

Amen.
