To my sister who just got saved,

This letter is based mainly on Romans 14, the chapter that I believe emphasises the power of convictions. As a new Christian, it is inevitable that you will be trying to find the way. It is sort of like, you gave your life to Christ, accepted Him as your Lord and Saviour and now what?

There are so many questions that you might have. What is acceptable for you to do now that you are a Christian? That question summarises pretty much all of the questions that I had. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us that “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” But what is this new person supposed to do? Are you meant to start all over again? Must you reinvent yourself? This is a very big step!

One thing that I can tell you is that you should avoid emulating others. Just because your friend does or doesn’t do something because they are a Christian, it does not mean that you must follow them. The only person who we should try to be like is Christ, whilst on Earth He lived a perfect life, although we may not be perfect, we can at least try to follow in His footsteps.

There are some things that are not explicitly forbidden in the Bible. For example, should a Christian drink alcohol or not? That is a topic that many debate about. It is possible to find scriptures to support both sides of the argument. So what do you do then? All I can say is thank God for the Holy Spirit! I recently learnt that what constitutes a sin can actually differ from person to person. According to Romans 14, a sin is doing anything that you believe is not right. Some call it following your conscience, what they really mean is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will convict you about certain things that you used to do. The Holy Spirit will assist you in becoming this new person.

Jesus Christ promised us that He would send us the Holy Spirit as an advocate and in John 14:15-17 He explains just how important the Spirit is. Since the Holy Spirit is God, it is extremely important that we follow it. We must allow the Spirit to dwell in us and when we feel convicted about certain issues we must obey. As Romans 14 reminds us, at the end of the day we all have to account to God. We will not be held accountable for what they did or what they didn’t do, we will be held accountable for our own actions.

It is important to not get too caught up in the debate about, what a Christian should do. The Apostle Paul reminds us that God’s kingdom is about so much more than just what we eat or drink. The main thing that we should focus on is our relationship with God and as that begins to strengthen, we will learn what it is that God expects from every single one of us. The reason for that is because as our relationship with God grows, we will become more engaged with His letters to us, the Bible. How can you claim to love and know someone without reading the letters that they have sent to you? How can you claim to love and know someone if you hardly speak to them and when you do it is only because you want something? As your relationship with God grows, your behaviour will change. You will begin to learn the plan that God has for you personally.

To my sister who just got saved, the most important thing that you should do is to follow Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.” Meditate on that verse and memorise it. It is important to to put all of your trust in God because things may happen to you, you might lose friends and gain new enemies after you give your heart to God but you need to understand that God has a plan for you and you must have faith that He is working in your favour.

To my sister who just got saved, this is my prayer for you. I pray that you will understand what it means to live life with an eternal perspective because when you do, this journey will become a lot easier. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

P.S. You may have realised that I did not really insert a lot of the scriptures that I mentioned and I did that for a reason. I would like to encourage you to get to know the Bible for yourself. Read the chapters and not just the verses. Read scriptures that relate to the specific scripture. If your Bible doesn’t have that reference, BibleHub is a great site to get cross references. Stand strong in the Word of God because you will face situations where you will be confused and the only way to clear this confusion is to understand what it is that God has said directly. There are many things that people may tell you that you must do as a Christian that are actually unbiblical so know the Word for yourself and you will be ok.

Great post! Thank you. I was searching for ‘just got saved’ to find some GOOD news (PTL on your sister) since the world has been a bit more crazy lately and even my Christian friends have been focusing too much on it.

Btw…from one blogger to another. .. keep writing. .. peace!

  3. Perhaps this discussion is why God says we should not judge others. Only God truly knows what our sin is. Thanks for sharing this thoughtful post.
