Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Some translations read “Pray without ceasing.” It can be so hard when you know that you must do something, but just don’t know how to.

Firstly, it is important to understand what prayer is. Have you ever heard the saying that “prayer is the most important conversation that you should have everyday?” Well that is exactly what prayer is. It is a conversation. Other than reading the Bible, it is one of the only ways that you can get closer to God. It allows you to build a relationship with Him. It is pretty hard to have a relationship with anyone without talking to them. So why do you think that it would be any different with regards to your relationship with God?

Don’t get caught up in the length of your prayer, just come to God with an open heart. There is no point rambling on to God if we aren’t really saying anything to Him. Romans 8:26 says “And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.” So one thing that you should do is pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit because once you are, He will be able to aid you in your prayers.

One of the most important scriptures regarding prayer is Matthew 6:5-13. Jesus tells us a few things. He tells us not to be like the hypocrites, praying in public with the intention of people seeing us praying so that they can assume that we are zealous and compliment us, He tells to pray by ourselves. He tells us not to ‘babble on’ repeating our words. He reminds us that Abba Father already knows our needs before we ask Him so ensure that you go to Him with a sincere heart because that is all that He wants.  Jesus even gives us a template of how to prayer in the Lord’s prayer. We can and should use this prayer. I encourage you to take some time out and understand what that prayer really means. Compare different Biblical translations and write down what it means to you. You can expand on that prayer. One thing that you will notice is that it is not a long prayer at all but it still says it all.

Here are a few tips on what to pray for:

– The body of Christ

– Friends and family

– Spiritual development

– Your future

– Any troubles

But most of all…Thank Him and ask it all in Jesus’ name!
