Count the cost…

If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it…whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.

– Luke 14:25-33

Let’s just say that if we counted the cost of following Christ, it would be expensive. We need to have a relationship with Him in order to realise just how much its worth. At first, it looks like He is asking for so much from us. He wants us to hate everyone in comparison to Him. He wants us to forsake all. He wants us to be His. He wants us to lose everything. Well that is what I first thought, but I now realised this is in order for us to make room for what He wants to give us.

One song that I love is ‘Comfort Zone,’ by Marvin Sapp. In it he sings “I’m coming out of my comfort zone, though it may cost me some friends, I’ll walk alone.” It sounds so good. But oh boy is that hard! MATE! Marvin Sapp is pretty much saying that he is willing to be a loner in order for him to reach new heights. Wouldn’t it be lonely reaching new heights by yourself? During the summer, God had told me to distance myself from certain people, that is why I that song meant so much to me. After counting the costs, I finally realised that it was worth it. In my eyes, it was a loss but I have now realised that it was a gain.

I was using a different currency than God’s. I was spending in the now, whilst he was investing in my future.
