In the absence of justice

I always thought that in the absence of justice, peace could not exist. I’m not a flower child, but I guess that somewhere along the line, my knowledge of the 60’s confused me. Desegregation, women’s rights and anti-war protests defined what peace has come to look like in my millennial mind. The absence of chaos. The absence of war. The absence of all limitations. So how could we ever find peace in an unjust world. My mind is muddled. I read that ‘My God will avenge me.’ But what happens if the sinner repents? Vengeance is whose?

I’ve never been one to believe that justice can be found in the justice system. When the guilty walk the streets and the innocent rot away, how can one find peace in an unjust system? When unanimity equates innocence. When they freed Barabbas over Jesus. How can you ever expect to find justice in a system?

You can’t wait for justice if you are looking for peace. You have to look for peace. In the absence of justice, peace can still be found.
